Payin' It Forward
Supporting the community.
As a studio, we believe in the importance of supporting our local and global community.
Always looking for great ways to reflect this commitment, Kurio recently launched a new and innovative fundraising program designed to assist organizations and individuals seeking to raise funds for non-profit programs, initiatives, and causes.
We call this our ‘Payin’ It Forward’ program.
Through this innovative fundraising program, our community partners help to promote the studio, earning a designated commission for every booking the studio receives as a result of their efforts.
It's like selling chocolate covered almonds, but better!
...and unlike the almonds and similar fundraising efforts, there are no costs involved to participate.

What is the PIF program?
Newly established and still in its pilot phase, the PIF program was inspired and initiated by Kurio's principal photographer, Alix Reynolds. As a social anthropologist with an avid interest in social justice and local and international community development, Alix has been involved with a wide variety of non-profit initiatives. She has worked as the Coordinator of Disaster Services and International Services for the Manitoba Region of the Canadian Red Cross; she has worked extensively in the field of immigrant and refugee settlement and was one of the founding coordinators of the 24hr Exile - an educational opportunity for youth to learn about refugee issues; for a time she lived and worked with hill tribe refugees from Burma in a refugee camp in northern Thailand.
Today, Alix's work revolves around photography and managing Kurio Studio, but she remains committed to social justice, advocacy, and to individuals and organizations working to evoke positive change. Anyone involved with a non-profit group or cause knows just how difficult ... and costly ... fundraising can be. The idea behind Kurio's Payin' It Forward program is to offer those involved in fundraising the opportunity to earn a cost-free commission from the sale of good quality photographic products and services.
How does the PIF program work?
Kurio only works with a limited number of partners at any given time, and those interested in fundraising with Kurio first go through an application and screening process. PIF partners then work in a variety of ways to promote and sell Kurio photography services, thereby earning the PIF amount designated for each service sold. When booking their session, clients simply tell us which PIF partner they would like us to support. Every Kurio photography session, including our custom designed sessions have a designated Payin' It Forward amount associated with them. This amount is contributed to one of our partners whether the client came to Kurio because of a fundraising effort or not.
Can I designate my PIF amount to an organization not on your list?
No, but you can certainly suggest that an organization or individual contact us to see if our program can help with their fundraising needs. As the program develops, you can expect to see our roster of PIF partners expand, and it will certainly change over time.
Are Kurio's photography services more expensive because of this?
On the contrary! In order to function as an effective fundraising initiave for our PIF partners, Kurio provides quality, professional photography, by skilled photographic artists at a highly competitive price. For example, our 'Just Shoot Me' sessions have been specially designed to offer great, personalized photography at a budget-friendly price. It's like paying for discount department store photography, but you actually get good photos! In addition to this, all PIF contributions come out of the studio's own pocket. Essentially, the PIF contributions that result from our photographic commissions are what we would otherwise spend on regular advertising and marketing. We think investing in the community is a way better idea ... as artists, we get to earn a livelihood from our work; as clients you get great photography at a great price; and of course our PIF partners receive contributions that help keep their good works going. It's win, win, win!
Who are Kurio's Payin' It Forward partners?
Kurio's PIF partners are either organizations, individuals or groups working to raise funds for important programs, initiatives and causes that benefit the local and global community. Partners do not have to be registered charities to take part in the PIF program, but the initiative for which they are raising funds must be non-profit in nature. Kurio's roster of PIF partners changes from time to time. Some of our partners choose to run shorter fundraising campaigns with us, while other partners join our program on a longer term basis. We do limit the number of partners we work with at any given time. While we do have an application process for all new PIF partners, there is no cost for our partners to join the PIF fundraising program and the studio supplies all necessary promotional materials. Below you will find more information about our current PIF partners. As the program gets established, we will be posting regular updates on this page and on our blog so you can follow all the good works that are supported by the PIF program.
How can I, or the organization I'm involved with, become a PIF partner?
Kurio accepts applications for PIF partnership from organizations, individuals and groups interested in raising funds for non-profit programs, initiatives and causes. You do not have to be a registered charity to apply but you do need to go through our application and screening process. The studio welcomes inquiries from any interested parties. We will supply you with complete information about the PIF program along with our application form. Once accepted into the program we will discuss your fundraising needs, design a campaign best suited to these needs, and provide you with all the necessary materials and support to kick-start and sustain your campaign. For inquiries and further information you can contact the studio by email [email protected] , by phone at 204-791-5734, or click here to use our handy-dandy contact form.

Please note that this is a new program and Kurio is currently
accepting applications for our PIF program.
In the meantime, we have selected the following stellar organizations to benefit from the program:
Art City - Photography Program
An organization that provides completely free digital and traditional photography education
to anyone interested in learning is a profoundly worthy cause in our opinion.
Art City is a non-profit community art centre located in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighbourhood.
Art City is not only dedicated to providing high-quality, free-of-charge art programming to participants of all ages, but since it's inception it has had a profoundly transformative effect on the community of which it is apart,
and on the lives of all those who have walked through it's doors.
A Winnipeg gem, Art City is a leader amongst community arts organizations
and a powerful agent of community building and change.
Renowned Winnipeg artist and Art City founder, Wanda Koop, expresses the philosophy that underlies Art City best:
“We are not necessarily making artists, we are giving people the opportunity to think creatively,
and my feeling is that if you can think creatively, you can survive almost anything.”

Kiva
~ loans that change lives ~
Kiva is a non-profit organization that works with microfinance institutions on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems. These loans effectively change lives by empowering people to help themselves. Kiva represents one of the best opportunities for sustainable giving out there. When you choose Kiva, your PIF contribution goes towards Kurio's Kiva Fund. From this fund, we make loan contributions to individuals around the world who are working to improve their quality of life. Once our loan contributions are repaid (and Kiva loans have almost a 99% repayment rate!), the fund is replenished and we are able to re-invest it. How awesome is that!
For more information on Kiva and the people & projects they help support, visit: www.kiva.org .
Winnipeg Humane Society
They look out for the animals. Need we say more?
The Winnipeg Humane Society is one of the oldest community service organizations in Winnipeg and the oldest and largest animal shelter and welfare organization in Manitoba. Founded over 115 years ago, the organization is committed to protecting all animals from suffering, promoting their welfare and dignity, and working to ensure that all animals are treated humanely.
Studio pooch Sierra, a lovely and energetic Siberian Husky X, gives the Winnipeg Humane Society four paws up.
They helped her out when she needed it, and found her a forever home. Good work WHS!
